Maryborough has recorded its fifth victory to date in 2023 to eclipse the club’s previous best AFL Masters Country Victoria football season.
The Pumas delivered a consistent four quarter performance on Sunday to defeat the Kerang-Swan Hill Rams 11.12 (78) to 5.3 (33) at Barker Oval Princes Park.
A quirk of the 2023 AFL Masters Vic Country fixture has seen Maryborough and Kerang face off three times already, with the Pumas having the better of the western Victorian rivalry.
Maryborough forward and club president Travis Cain said the Pumas’ third victory at home had left the club’s fortress intact.
“It is something we talk about before each home game and, so far this year, we’ve managed to achieve that, which is pretty good,” he said.
“The guys who were playing on the weekend were ‘on’ from the first ball-up, you could tell. The midfielders, the forwards, the backs, they all really got the job done this time.”
Cain opened the scoring for the home team in the first term, with Lauchlan Williams kicking the only other major for the quarter.
The Pumas had stretched their lead to 27 points by the main change through goals to Cain, Trevor Chapman and Chris Cudia.
After trading goals in the third term with the Rams, Maryborough finished with plenty of run scoring four goals in the final quarter, including two more for Cain, who finished with four.
Mathew Batson, Williams, Jack Mills, Brett Forti and Cain were among Maryborough’s best on a day where there was no shortage of contributors.
The Pumas will play against the Murray Crays for the first time when the two clubs meet each other at Barker Oval Princes Park on the weekend of July 29/30.
