Cool heads saw Maryborough’s hot start to the AFL Masters Vic Country season continue with a 14-point victory against Ballarat on Sunday.
The Pumas overcame a spirited Diggers fightback in chilly conditions at Ballarat’s Russell Square to finish ahead, 6.5 (41) to 3.9 (27).
A dominant third quarter gave the visitors a five-goal lead at the final change. However, Ballarat did not concede, regaining the momentum in the final quarter and ultimately falling short due to inaccurate kicking.
Maryborough coach Terry Hillier said the victory — the Pumas’ second this year after two matches — was one of the club’s most complete efforts in recent history.
“Ballarat is a polished side, with very good skills and a very smart game structure, so to get that result in Ballarat, in those conditions, was a great effort,” he said.
“It was one of those games where, if it had been junior footy, you would have described it as team effort. Everyone did their bit.”
Patrick Jenes was the Pumas’ most effective defender in the first half, but it was Hillier’s decision to switch Jenes to centre half forward after half time which turned what had been an even match.
Meanwhile, Nick Weaver shifted to full back, ensured goals remained scarce for the home team.
Trev Chapman and Chris Cudia each kicked two goals, with Brett Forti and Jenes finishing with one apiece.
The midfield battle was practically even, with Brett Forti, Jibb Iglesias and Andrew Hughes matching their Diggers’ counter-parts in the centre and Scott Newitt’s speed proving decisive around the ground.
The Pumas next head to Kerang on May 21 to take on the Rams.
