In what was a very entertaining game at the Bill Woodfull Reserve on Saturday, Carisbrook managed to stave off the challenge from Maldon to win a close encounter by nine points.
The Bombers fancied their chances before the game and after leading at the first change by four points, their confidence levels were high.
However, the Redbacks mounted their challenge in the second term, holding the Bombers to just one goal for the term, and kicking four goals themselves, to take a 16-point lead into the main break.
In the past Carisbrook would have kicked away in the second half of the game, but to the Dons’ credit, they held the upper hand in the third quarter kicking three goals to one to trail at the final change by just two points.
It was a very exciting, but low-scoring final quarter as both teams battled hard for the ball and with only three final quarter goals being kicked, it was the Redbacks that held sway to win their first game of the season.
Carisbrook’s better players were Pat Van der Pol, Matt Bilton, Dillon Treacy, Adam Hurse, Anden Lever and Darcy Bond and co-coach,Dean Chester, was one of three players to score two goals in his first game of the season in his return game from a significant knee injury.
Maldon named their better players as Adam Robinson, Matthew Gray, Damian Wust, Brandon Carter, Alex Farrow and Billy Johns, with Shaun Burchell being the only multiple goal scorer with two goals.
Maldon now host the Maryborough Giants and will be hoping they can win their first game of the season after two close losses in their opening games.
Carisbrook host Campbells Creek who are coming off the bye and the Creekers will be hoping to provide a very competitive game against the seventh-placed Redbacks.
