It wasn’t a first-up victory for the Carisbrook Lady Redbacks, but there was more than enough optimism in their performance to suggest that good times are right around the corner for them, after a 23-point loss to East Point.

The result was Carisbrook’s most competitive against any of 2023’s top four teams since their return to the competition, and it was only a big third quarter which stopped Carisbrook’s chances of a victory.

The first quarter was a grind at White Flat, with no goals scored, and East Point scoring two behinds for the quarter to lead.

Both teams were able to hit the scoreboard in the second quarter, with East Point kicking a goal, while the Lady Redbacks hit the scoreboard with Grace Brady putting through the first goal of their season, trailing by just four points at half time.

It was all East Point in the third quarter, however, as they kicked two goals to no score to extend the margin to a game-high 18 points at the end of the quarter.

Just like the first term, there were no goals scored, but East Point were able to win the quarter by kicking six behinds to one to eventually take their 23-point win.

Still, there were a number of positives.

East Point’s three goals were the second fewest Carisbrook had conceded in a game since their return, while it was also a 98-point improvement on the losing margin in their last away game against the Kangaroos.

Anika Munn was exceptional again, while Maddison Smith, Tiani Jardine, Isabella Hoban and Brady were also named in the best.

Meantime, it was a tougher ask for the under 16 girls, with player unavailability cruelling them in their 141-point loss to North Ballarat.

Carisbrook fought hard throughout the balance of the morning, but eight goals in the third term, and 21 overall, meant the Roosters assumed control from the outset.

Georgina Bates, Rhani Evans, Olivia Rogers, Remi Jardine, Tamika Loone-Grundy and Erika Arce were named Carisbrook’s best.
