Carisbrook will be keen to show their continued improvement in the Ballarat Football League Women’s (BFLW) com-petition this week when they host their first game of the new season against Darley.

It was perhaps cruel that the Lady Redbacks went down by 44 points last week, given it was a performance that belied the gap between the two teams.

There is clear and obvious improvement for the club at this early stage of the season, and they were still very much in the game against Lake Wendouree, trailing by 14 points at the last change.

But the Lakers’ experience was telling as they kept on powering through the game in the last quarter, kicking four goals to eventually take a comfortable win.

Still, there was a lot of respect gained for Carisbrook last week, particularly in their efforts to defend well and also evening up the contest.

They were rewarded with the first goal of the game through Tiani Jardine, and were desperately unlucky not to lead at quarter time after the Lakers conjured up a late goal.

Just one goal was scored between the second and third quarters by the Lakers, showing how the Lady Redbacks had improved on that end of the game.

Katherine O’Rielly put in a stellar performance, using her run and dash to advantage, while Isabella Hoban, Maddison Smith, Anika Munn, Olivia Butler and Tara Curtis also put in good efforts.

It will be a big challenge against Darley this week, who were able to defeat the Lakers by 80 points in round one, before following up with a 65-point win over Bacchus Marsh last Saturday night.

Carisbrook will be hoping to continue to improve their competitiveness against last season’s premiers, having reduced their biggest loss of 207 points to a gap of 113 points by the end of the season.

Meantime, the under 16s will be facing a trip to Maddingley Park to face Bacchus Marsh on Sunday, as they seek their first victory of the season.

There was no luck against Redan on Sunday morning at home, losing by 53 points.

However, the positive for the girls was a much stronger lineup, having dealt with player unavailability in round one, and will be hoping to perform well against the similarly winless Cobras.

Olivia Rogers played well last week, named their best player alongside Rhani Evans, Amber Hogarth, Sasha Serry, Tahlia Jordan and Eden Weaver.
