Local drivers have been put on notice with footy and netball finals now underway, with an increased police presence on the district’s roads.
The first rounds of qualifying and elimination finals for the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League got underway last weekend, with local police stepping up their presence on local roads to deter poor driver behaviour.
Central Goldfields Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Andrew Henderson said throughout finals, which will conclude on September 17, police will be ensuring drivers are doing the right thing.
“With an increase in traffic with our local football and netball finals over the upcoming weekends, we are urging drivers to be vigilant,” he said.
“We will be out there in force targeting and enforcing driver behaviour.
“Community members should be aware and on notice that police are out and about doing their job — road safety is our key focus in all of this.”
Act Sgt Henderson said there were no standout incidents from the first round of finals last weekend, a trend he hopes to see continue.
“Our units were tasked around the area last weekend and we didn’t have any major issues,” he said.
“People need to be safe — turn up to the finals in car loads and have designated drivers so you mitigate the risk of drink driving.
“Enjoy yourself at the finals, support local and district teams in every possible way but be safe doing so and be mindful of other road users coming to and from matches.”
Act Sgt Henderson said throughout finals and for the rest of the year, there will be a noticeable police presence in the area.
“We’ll have both our units here out on the road locally and there’ll be support from divisional resources from Bendigo and also State Highway Patrol out of Melbourne,” he said.
“The weather is warming up and people are starting to move around and from here through for the rest of the year we have a number of operations focussing on road safety and enforcement on our roads.
“Drivers will certainly be seeing a lot more police presence on the road.”
