Rotary awards Lyn Curry
The local Rotary club has honoured the efforts of Girls Guides' Lyn Curry.
For the last four decades, Lyn Curry has made a significant difference to the lives of young women through the Girl Guides and now another local group has recognised her notable work.
Ms Curry was presented with the coveted Paul Harris Fellow award on July 18 at the Maryborough Rotary Club.
A Paul Harris Fellow is an individual who personally contributes USD $1000 to the Rotary’s charitable arm, or in whose name that amount is contributed because of their community-minded efforts.
Every Paul Harris Fellow receives a pin and certificate — which “identifies them as an advocate of the [Rotary] Foundation’s goals of world peace and international understanding”.
According to the group, Ms Curry’s extensive contribution to the Guides led to her receiving the honor.
She has been a Guide leader for nearly 40 years and in that time has mentored countless girls and future leaders.
From helping members grow and develop, conducting hikes, attending and leading international camps, she’s done it all.
“Despite all her tasks she has always been present and available to provide support, inspiration, ideas and advice to girls as they progress on their guiding journey,” a spokesperson from the local Rotary club said.
“Through the contribution made in Lyn’s honor, great things will be accomplished for the world as a result of the Rotary Foundation’s programs.
“[We] congratulate Lyn and encourage her to continue the great work she does in the Girl Guides.”
For Ms Curry, the award came as a pleasant surprise.
“I was shocked, I had no idea this was going to happen,” she said.
“You always just do things, and you don’t expect a reward for it but I also think that this isn’t just about me — it’s about the Girl Guides too and the work we’ve done together with other community groups.
“In that way, I think it’s amazing and I do feel proud.”
Ms Curry now joins a family of well over a million Paul Harris Fellows worldwide.
