Maryborough Rovers kept their finals chances alive with a strong 18-goal victory over Dunolly.

Unthinkable as it was two weeks ago, wins in their last two games have seen Rovers close the gap on eighth-placed Maldon to just one game, hauling themselves in the battle for the last spot in the finals alongside the Bombers, Newstead and Royal Park.

A tightly contested first period saw Rovers take a slight lead, scoring 11 goals to nine in what was a defensive affair early on.

With the game opening up a little bit more in the second quarter, Rovers pounced on their opportunities, scoring 13 goals to eight to hold a 24-17 lead at half time.

Dunolly needed a response, but it was not to be despite scoring nine goals for the period. Rovers would score another 13 goals to ensure they would lead 37-26 at the final change.

In a dour struggle in the last period, Rovers would only score eight goals, but more importantly, prevent any chances of Dunolly’s comeback by holding the Eagles to just one goal throughout the quarter to ensure they would take a 45-27 victory.

The best players were not provided by either side prior to print deadline.

For Rovers, Abbey Raven led the way with 37 goals, while Samantha Cheetham was Dunolly’s only goal scorer for the entirety of the afternoon, scoring all 27 goals.
