Avoca met Trentham on a very muddy surface and went down to the Saints by 83 points.

It was the opening term where the damage was done with the Saints kicking seven goals while holding the Bulldogs scoreless.

It was a much closer game from quarter time onwards, but the Saints still had a further 13 shots on goal to Avoca’s three as the home team had the upper hand over the visiting Bulldogs players.

Zach Gervasoni and Joel Cowan dominated possession out of the middle and set up scoring opportunities for James Regan, with four goals, and Jake Keogh who scored three. Edward Fanning was the only other multiple goal scorer of the eight players to kick goals for the Saints.

It was a disappointing day for the Bulldogs, who thought that the muddy conditions may restrict the scoring opportunities for the Saints, but it was not to be, particularly in the opening term as the Saints blew the game out of the water.

The big victory improved the third placed Saints percentage by 10 per cent, which could be handy as the home and away season draws to a close over the next three weeks.

The Saints meet second placed Harcourt next week away from home, and it is a very important game for the Saints chances of jumping into the top two when it counts.

Trentham’s better players against the Bulldogs were Gervasoni, Cowan, Joel Dovaston, Keogh, Alister Ferrier and Bryce Hinneberg.

Avoca named Cameron Antonio, Byron Wynd, Sean Moyle, Matt Newton, Scott Cawthan and Bryce Howell as their better players.
