For over 60 years, The Maryborough Salvation Army has been red-ily available thanks to generous donations from the community to the Red Shield Appeal. Salvos captain Ron Stobie is hoping to hear more donations hit the jar as the organisation prepares for its trivia night and silent auction.

Celebrating 60 years of providing charitable aid, The Maryborough Salvation Army is once again calling on the community to dig deep and support its Red Shield Appeal.

The organisation has spent the last week hosting a number of fundraising activities, including static point and intersection collections, as well as a car wash service.

Having already raised around$5000 through those avenues, local Salvos Captain Ron Stobie said the appeal would see a final donation push with an upcoming trivia night and silent auction — which he hopes will further fill the jar to a total of $7500.

“I encourage everyone to come along because that’s the biggest way to support us,” he said.

“It’s a great community event and it’ll be a fun night, open for all ages — there’ll be something for everyone.

“Not only does it raise funds, but it also brings the community together. It is about the community supporting the community and we are a very generous one at that. We aren’t huge numbers wise, but we are very generous.”

Another incentive for residents to attend, Mr Stobie said, is that all the money collected, will help local people.

“The funds we raise, it will all 100 percent stay in the town and will support our community,” he said.

“This year, we’re going to allocate the money into running our food pantry — we have seen an increase in people who are coming in and so we want to provide that practical support.”

Every week, close to 200 people drop into the Maryborough Salvos’ pantry — with the situation exacerbated by the cost-of-living crisis.

“The food pantry is quite important for the town,” Mr Stobie said.

“We have multiple spaces in our community that people can access to get food and each one is crucial.

“So we want to ensure there’s a constant supply of groceries and fresh produce for those who need it.”

Nationally, in light of its diamond anniversary, the Red Shield Appeal is aiming to raise $38 million to ensure its key work across areas such as homelessness, family and domestic violence, youth, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, financial hardship and much more can continue in local communities around the country.

The Maryborough Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal Trivia Night will get underway this Saturday, June 1 from 7 pm onwards at their 27 Wills Street facility.
