Saturday pennant continues to deliver different results
A topsy-turvy season of bowls continued in round four, showing just how tight the season has been so far.
DIVISION ONE
Avoca Red broke through for their first victory of the season when they were able to defeat Talbot Gold 60-48.
It was a much-needed victory for Avoca, who had come into the game having had three big defeats.
But Daniel Giddings’ 23-6 win over Peter McLaughlan gave them a spark, as did Noel Parratt’s 26-14 win over Chris Crossley. While Matt Vernon scored a 28-11 win over Ian Proctor, it wasn’t enough for Talbot Gold to overcome.
Dunolly Blue extended their lead atop the competition thanks to a 69-52 victory over Maryborough Golf Blue in a game where they took all three rinks.
The rinks were incredibly consistent throughout the day, with Peter Waters taking a 22-17 win over Anthony Chambers, while Alan Weir took a 23-18 win over Gerry Carmody. Tony Galofaro finished the job off with a 24-17 win over Kevin Prime.
Both Highland Tartan and Highland White played out a draw, with the teams scoring 60 shots each.
Highland White did take two of the rinks, with Bert Spencer taking a 22-21 win over Michael Fryar, while Roy Crawley took a 25-16 win over Greg Shay. Garry Coburn took a rink back for Tartan with a 23-13 win over Robert Bursill, but the result suggests that Highland’s top two teams seem to be evenly matched.
DIVISION TWO
Newstead Blue and Maryborough Golf continued their runaway start to the season, while Maldon have climbed to third.
Newstead Blue maintain top spot after their dominant 69-35 win over Talbot, which saw them take all three rinks in the process.
Brian Daly took a 16-13 win over Ray Prentice, but that was as close as Talbot would get, with Bill Burnett taking a 24-15 win over Laurie Vernon, and David Cobden’s 29-7 win over Barb Crossley stamped Newstead Blue’s authority on the game.
Maryborough Golf have dropped slightly to second on the ladder, but still took a comfortable 79-49 win over Dunolly Gold.
Fabio Delconte’s 26-14 win for Dunolly Gold over Jeff Smith was the first rink Maryborough Golf dropped all season, but they still had a dominant time on the other two rinks, with Kort Gay taking a 32-7 win over Paul Chase, while Ross Andrews landed a 33-16 win over Aaron Britten.
Maldon’s dominant 116-29 win over Bridgewater sees them keep track of the two leaders, while showing that their best can leave them as a premiership threat.
Wesley Honeyman took a 37-9 win over Donald Wilson, while Annette Gillham was even more dominant in taking a 42-7 win over Barbara Catto. Geoff Cobden finished things off with a 37-13 win over Christopher Brooshooft.
Avoca broke through for their first win of the season with a 78-47 win over Dunolly Green, taking them to seventh on the ladder in the process.
They were able to win all three rinks, with Gordon Marr taking a 27-15 win over Sandra Chaplin, while Geoff Loosmore took a 24-18 win over Keith McKenzie. Ann Loosmore finished things off with a 27-14 win over Wayne Stephens.
Carisbrook are also starting to motor, taking a 70-45 win over Newstead White, moving up to fourth position.
Ross Gregory took a 26-16 win over Graeme Lipback, but Peter Tangey’s 20-17 win over Phillip Burt allowed Newstead White to get on the board. It was Ron Baker’s 27-9 win over Rod Jackson, however, which allowed Carisbrook to control the pace of the day.
Highland had the bye, and took 16 premiership points.
ROUND FIVE
It appears there will be plenty more chopping and changing as round five approaches.
Top of the agenda in division one will be the battle between Dunolly Blue and Highland Tartan at Dunolly, with the winner set to assume top spot on the ladder.
Dunolly Blue got the job done last week and, with a 10-point lead, will be hoping to extend that, while Highland Tartan will look to come out strong out of the gates after their draw with Highland White.
Golf Blue will be looking to get back on the winners list when they host a fired up Avoca Red.
After a strong start to the season, Golf Blue have stagnated with losses to Talbot Gold and Dunolly Blue over the last fortnight, while Avoca Red will be looking to continue their renaissance after their first win last week.
A spot in the top four is on the line when Talbot Gold and Highland White meet at Talbot.
Talbot Gold will be desperate to get back on the winners list after dropping their game to Avoca Red, while Highland White showed they will be able to match it with the contenders after their draw with Highland Tartan last week.
In division two, leaders Newstead Blue will have the bye, meaning they will have taken 78 out of a possible 80 points to start the season.
Maryborough Golf will be hoping to join them in achieving that when they host Dunolly Green, sitting percentage behind Newstead Blue at the moment.
Dunolly Gold will be hoping to keep in touch with the top four when they host Bridgewater.
Bridgewater have unfortunately struggled since their arrival into the competition, only taking one rink to this point, but will be keen to make their mark here.
Fourth meets fifth when Highland hosts Carisbrook in an important game for both teams.
Carisbrook have settled in recent weeks, while Highland will still be looking for some consistent form to start the season, having dropped two games early on.
Avoca will be looking to follow up from their good win last week when they host Talbot. The winner could yet find themselves in the top four depending on how the result of the Carisbrook and Highland game goes, with both teams hoping to keep in touch with the leaders.
Maldon will host Newstead White as they hope to continue their unbeaten start to the season.
