Saturday lawn bowls finally returned on the weekend, with both division one and two teams kicking off their season.

Highland Tartan made the strongest start, adding to their midweek supremacy by sweeping aside Avoca Red to take a 76-37 victory, as well as all 16 points on offer.

Highland Tartan were able to win 27-12 on rink one, followed by an even more convincing victory on rink two, 27-8, while Avoca fought hard on rink three, but couldn’t prevent the sweep, with Highland Tartan winning 22-17.

Alongside Highland Tartan, Talbot Gold were also able to take full points, although they were made to work for it as Dunolly Gold challenged them all the way.

Talbot Gold got off to the perfect start with a 26-16 rink one victory, but Dunolly Gold really took it up to Talbot in rinks two and three, with Talbot taking narrow wins, 20-18 and 19-17 respectively.

It was better news for Dunolly Blue however, taking victory over Highland Red 67-43. Blue took two of the three rinks, with a 23-16 victory on rink one followed by a 31-11 victory on rink two which sealed 14 premiership points. Highland Red was able to pick up two crucial points thanks to a 16-13 victory on rink three, however.

Maryborough Golf Blue recorded a 65-41 victory over Newstead Blue which saw them finish the round in third place on the ladder.

The final margin of victory was boosted thanks to Golf’s dominant 32-7 victory on rink three, with the other two rinks proving to be thrillers. Golf took an 18-17 victory on rink one, while Newstead picked up two premiership points thanks to their 17-15 victory on rink two.

In division two, it was Highland White which took control atop the ladder at the end of their first game of the season with a dominant 97-38 victory over Newstead White.

Highland White succeeded in sweeping Newstead on all three rinks, taking all 16 premiership points on offer.

A 52-4 win on rink one sealed Newstead’s fate, but there were more competitive performances on rink two and three, with Highland White winning 22-17 and 23-17 respectively.

Carisbrook finished the round in second position on the ladder following an 84-32 victory over Dunolly Green.

They proved to be consistent across all three rinks, with Brook winning rink one 31-10, rink two 27-11 and rink three 26-11 to take home all 16 points on offer.

Maldon made a strong start to the season with an 83-47 victory over Maryborough Golf Gold, where they, much like Highland White and Carisbrook, took home all 16 points.

A 31-12 victory on rink one sent Maldon on their way, before a 29-13 rink two victory sealed the deal. Golf proved to be much more competitive on rink three, but Maldon were able to take the two match points, winning 23-22.

In the thriller of the round, Talbot Brown overcame Avoca Gold winning two rinks to take home 12 points thanks to a 64-51 victory.

The key difference proved to be rink one, where Talbot Brown prevailed 27-9. Avoca Gold were able to win thrilling encounters on rinks two and three, taking rink two 20-19, before winning rink three 22-18.

The competition now moves ahead to round three.

A mouthwatering match-up between top teams Highland Tartan and Talbot Gold headlines the weekend clashes at Talbot Bowls Club, while Dunolly Blue and Dunolly Gold will do battle. Highland Red and Newstead Blue will also meet, while Avoca Red and Maryborough Golf Blue rounds out the division one matches.

In division two, impressive winners Highland White and Maldon will meet at Highland, while fellow winners Talbot Brown and Carisbrook meet at Talbot Bowls Club. Maryborough Golf Gold and Avoca Gold will look to bounce back at the Maryborough Golf Club, while Dunolly Green and Newstead White will also be looking for their first victories of the season at Dunolly.

In other bowls news, the midweek pennant was washed out on Tuesday afternoon, following Monday’s rain. The next round will be hosted on Wednesday, November 2, due to the Melbourne Cup holiday the day before.
