The Country Women's Association (CWA) Maryborough branch is inviting residents to test their luck at the group’s Hoy Afternoon.

Hoy is bingo played with cards, with participants hoping for all their cards in their hand to be called first. Lucky door and raffles will also be held at the event.

CWA Victoria, formed in March 1928, aims to support women, children and families across their 300 branches in the state, including Maryborough.

CWA Maryborough Branch president Rachel Mitchell said money raised from the event will allow the group to provide their support programs.

“The money raised will be spread out to keep CWA’s support ongoing locally and in Victoria, most of the money will go to the CWA emergency fund which helps people affected by disasters across the state,” she said.

“We have our Share the Dignity campaign which provides pads and things like that for homeless women.

“At the recent state conference we had Hope in a Suitcase, where a lot of branches brought down items that would go to kids going into foster care.”

The local branch meets on the first Wednesday of every month from 10 am at the St Andrews Uniting Church for craft sessions, morning tea and excursions.

“We meet some wonderful people,” CWA Maryborough Branch secretary Shirley Button said.

“We look out for each other, if one member is struggling the rest of the group will help out where they need it — and it isn’t just for older people, it would be great if we could get in some younger members too.”

The Hoy Afternoon is on Wednesday, July 10 at St Andrews Uniting Church from 1 pm. Entry is $10.
