To taste some of Australia’s finest award-winning pies — the ones peppered with exceptional quality — you simply need to head down to Maryborough’s Parkview Bakery.

On September 5, the bakery took out 10 medals, including three gold titles, at this year’s Official Great Aussie Pie Competition.

Mouth-watering treats from the Parkview Bakery that won the top honour in the Gourmet category were: the Moroccan Chicken, Beef and Black bean, and Southern Pork pies.

Silver medals were given to the Beef Pastie, as well as the Pepper, Beef Carrot Parsnip, and Thai Green Chicken pies.

The Mince Meat, and Chunky Mince Meat pies, and the Beef Tomato Apple sausage roll received bronze.

According to the popular eatery’s owner, Gary Higgins, with the recent recognition, the bakery and its staff have earned “bragging rights”.

“We’ve gotten a couple of dozen medals over the years,” he said.

“This time though they also had a record number of entries — 400 more entries than they normally get — and to win all these certificates in the face of that is great.

“It’s a testament to the food we put out there and it’s well deserved, it’s not tokenistic because it’s hard to get a gold medal.”

The secret ingredient behind the country’s best pies, Mr Higgins said, is found not only in their appetising fillings but also in the baker.

And without the Parkview Bakery’s bakehouse manager Mason Tranter, winning gold could’ve been a burnt opportunity.

Mr Tranter joined the bakery nine years ago as an apprentice — almost a decade on, he’s the mind behind the accolade worthy pie recipes.

Whipping in the emotive with the practical, his approach to creating the nation’s greatest baked-goodies is quite straightforward.

“Passion — that’s all it is,” Mr Tranter said.

“I reckon if you’ve got the passion for it, you always want to make it work. You want to see people enjoying your product.

“You also need to eat — the key to winning is eating a lot of pies.”

With Mr Tranter and his team baking away at Parkview Bakery, Mr Higgins only has a single message for the community.

“Come and try our award-winning pies,” he said.
