It wasn’t a victory that Maryborough Soccer Club craved, but they were able to earn their first point of the season courtesy of a last-minute scramble which landed an equaliser against Bacchus Marsh.

Coming in to the game, both the blue and whites and the Scorpions were the two remaining winless teams, but it appeared Maryborough had played better in the early stages, and that’s how it started in their first home game of the season at Jubilee Oval on Sunday, with David Scofield netting to help them lead 1-0 at the main break.

But Bacchus Marsh were determined to get themselves on the board, and they were able to push for goals, dominating terri-tory for much of the second half.

Eventually, they would get rewarded, as goals through Daniel Jones and Jalen Shugg helped them lead 2-1 with 15 minutes to go.

However, despite facing a torrent of attacks in the last 15 minutes as the Scorpions looked to put the game away, a rare foray into the box for Maryborough saw a scramble of players, including Jake Bucknall and Scofield, hurry the ball into the back of the net, with the goal credited to Scofield for a brace, and Maryborough salvaging a point.

The result holds Maryborough in good stead ahead of their second home game of the season next week when they host Ballarat Soccer Club, coming off a 4-0 win over Creswick.

The game will be a special one for the club, with the game moved from Jubilee Oval to Princes Park for the first time in what is sure to be a special occasion for the club.

Elsewhere, Maryborough’s under 14s were unable to score victory against Bacchus Marsh, despite a terrific goal from Jacob Antolini, as they went down 5-1, as they now prepare to host Ballarat, while Maryborough’s under nines team will host Daylesford and Hepburn United and Ballarat at Coronation Park on Sunday morning.
