A showstopping goalkicking duel between spearheads Tyler James and Brodie Leonard-Shannon provided a tasty main event to an entertaining game, with Maldon holding out all of Newstead’s advances to win by 13 points.

Pre-game, the topic of violence against women was spoken about, with both teams gathering on the ground to pay their respects, and the ground markings were painted purple for the day.

When the game got underway, there were certainly plenty of fireworks in the opening term, with both teams going goal-for-goal in a fascinating start to the game.

In the end, it was Newstead who took a four-point lead at the opening change, thanks to six goals to five.

The scoring dried up for the Kangaroos in the second term, but there was no letting up from the Dons, who was able to take control of the game in the second term in kicking four goals to one, which allowed them to lead by 18 points at the main break.

But it was Newstead’s turn again to take charge during the third term as they plotted a way back into the game. This yielded three goals for the quarter as they roared back into contention, while Maldon could only score a solitary goal.

With the margin five points at the final change, the game was anyone’s in such an important clash for both teams’ finals prospects, but it was the Dons who settled into a rhythm and found a way out, kicking the final two goals of the game to hold on by 13 points.

Both Maldon’s Leonard-Shannon and Newstead’s James kicked seven goals apiece in an old fashioned shootout, with both players providing a great avenue to goal.

But there were also plenty of great performers across both teams.

Adam Robinson continued his good form for Maldon, as did Alex Farrow, while Billy Miller, Max Johns and Bradley Evans also performed well when the Dons needed them most.

For Newstead, Angus Mayes continued what’s been a solid start to his season, as did Anthony Robins, while Ben Pedretti, Sam Daldy and Harrison McGuire were also named in the best.
