DIVISION ONE

Maryborough Golf Blue are the sole remaining undefeated team in division one after taking all three rinks on offer in their win against Highland White.

Both impressive winners in the opening round, it was Golf Blue that gradually got on top through the balance of the day to eventually move into top spot on the ladder with a 68-44 win.

Anthony Chambers defeated Barry Mahar 20-14, with Gerry Carmody’s 17-13 win over Robert Bursill extending their cushion. Graeme Orr’s 31-17 win over Warren Roberts finished off the job for Golf Blue.

Highland Tartan hit back after their loss to Golf Blue last week, dispatching Talbot Gold with a 69-47 victory.

Talbot could only muster one point out of the afternoon, that coming through Barb Crossley’s 21-21 draw with Garry Coburn. But it was all Highland Tartan on the remaining two rinks, with Michael Fryar taking a 26-12 win over Matt Vernon and Greg Shay taking a 22-14 success over Peter McLaughlan.

Dunolly Blue also bounced back from their round one defeated by defeating Avoca Red in a hard-fought battle, 74-52.

Realistically, it was Tony Galofaro’s 37-16 win over Leigh Richards which made up the bulk of the difference, although Dunolly did make sure they banked more points with Peter Waters’ 22-15 win over Daniel Giddings. Avoca Red did score two points, courtesy of Ian Proctor’s 21-15 win over Alan Weir.

DIVISION TWO

Three teams remain perfect after the second round.

Newstead Blue took a second big victory in succession, backing up their win over Bridgewater with a 93-30 win over Avoca.

There was no respite from the early ladder leaders throughout the afternoon, with Bill Burnett taking a 35-8 win over Gordon Marr, while Bernie Gervasoni was equally dominant in a 34-6 win over Allyson Hearnden. Brian Daly finished off the job with a 24-16 win over Loralee Field.

Maryborough Golf are just percentage behind, keeping pace with a 72-45 victory over Dunolly Green.

Kort Gay took a 21-14 win over Wayne Stephens, while Ross Andrews had the best win of the day, taking a 30-12 win over Wayne McLeish. Harold Patullo finished off the job with a 21-19 win over Sandra Chaplin which ensured Golf would again take all three rinks.

Talbot marked their first game of the division two season with a comfortable 67-36 win over Bridgewater.

Ray Prentice took a 25-13 win over Ian Clutton, while Laurie Vernon defeated John Fagan 23-8 in a low-scoring battle. Geraldine Smith finished off the job with a 19-15 win over Allan Harrison.

Maldon made up for lost time last week with their drawn game by venturing to the Highland Society and recording an upset win by four shots over last year’s premiers, 61-57.

Annette Gillham got Maldon on the board with an 18-17 win over Bert Spencer, while Geoff Cobden solidified Maldon’s position with a 22-14 win over Roy Crawley. While Tilleke Wadeson scored a 26-21 win over Wesley Honeyman, it was not enough for Highland to overcome the deficit at hand.

In the closest game of the round, Dunolly Gold held off Newstead White to take a two-shot victory.

Rod Jackson got Newstead White on the board with a 19-17 win over Paul Chase, but Fabio Delconte likewise got Dunolly Gold back in front with a 19-15 win over Mark Leckey. Gold’s victory was assured when Aaron Britten and Graeme Lipback couldn’t be separated on 19 shots apiece.

ROUND THREE

Round three looms as an important one, with teams looking to ensure they don’t lose ground.

Division one leaders Maryborough Golf Blue will venture to Talbot Gold, where Golf will look to remain the only unbeaten team in the competition, while Talbot will look to avoid a second straight loss.

Highland Tartan will host Avoca Red, with Tartan looking to score a second straight win, while the stakes are high for Avoca Red, who’ll be hoping to avoid a third straight defeat.

Rounding out division one, Highland White and Dunolly Blue meet in an intriguing encounter, with both teams looking to get their second win of the season.

Game of the round in division two sees Maryborough Golf looking to continue their good start to the season when they host Highland, who will be looking to bounce straight back on to the winners’ list.

Leaders Newstead Blue will be favoured to take a third straight win, but won’t have it as easy as they have so far when they host Dunolly Gold.

Talbot will likewise have a chance to maintain their winning run, travelling to Carisbrook, who’ll be hoping to come off the bye for their first win of the season.

Dunolly Green and Maldon will do battle, with Maldon hoping to take their great form from last week into this game, while Dunolly Green will be keen to get back onto the winners list.

The opportunity for a first win of the season awaits both Bridgewater and Newstead White at Bridgewater — in Bridgewater’s case, they’ll be hoping for a first win in the Goldfields Playing Area.
