Sporting clubs and residents of Dunolly are set to benefit from the launch of a new scoreboard at Deledio Reserve last Saturday.

Central Goldfields Shire Council CEO Lucy Roffey, councillor Liesbeth Long and Member for Ripon Martha Haylett were among those to attend and speak at the launch.

The scoreboard was secured thanks to funding from Laanecoorie Dunolly Cricket Club and Dunolly FNC, which contributed over $100,000 to the project, while there were also investments from the Victorian Government’s Local Sports Infrastructure Fund ($25,000) and the Bendigo Community Bank Maldon and District branch ($12,000).

The scoreboard, in addition to its use on match day in football and cricket, can also be used by local community groups and businesses and display important information in the case of emergencies.

Haylett said it was an exciting development for the town of Dunolly.

“The brand-new electronic scoreboard is an asset to the entire Dunolly community. It will make game days even better and will also keep locals safe and informed in the event of emergencies,” she said.

“Thank you to all local sponsors and contributors for a massive team effort — especially the Laanecoorie Dunolly Cricket Club for their fundraising efforts.”

Laanecoorie Dunolly president Ralph Williams said that the opening of the new scoreboard was an effort two years in the making.

“It’s been a two-year project, the Community Bank Maldon and District branch was a big help — Dunolly is a sub-branch, and they came on board after a grant application. The in-kind support from local businesses which helped us install the scoreboard was great too,” he said.

“We had been putting a bit away for a couple of years. The scoreboard benefactors were fantastic with their donations, and were rewarded with their names on the screen every time it turns on.”

The inspiration for the scoreboard was modelled on the one that can be seen at Canterbury Park in Eaglehawk, according to Williams.

“We modelled it on the one that Eaglehawk has in Bendigo, we thought it was the biggest one in the district, so we tried to match their size. It’s clearly visible from the other side of the oval — the visibility is as good as it will get,” he said.

Williams said he was pleased to generate a large crowd on hand to launch the scoreboard.

“It’s fantastic. We had a great day on Saturday with the opening of the scoreboard, and we had a good crowd of about 40 or 50 people. It was good to have it officially opened,” he said.
