Square too good for Pies
It was a difficult day for Maryborough as they were held to one goal for the afternoon by an in-form Golden Square team in a 188-point loss at Wade Street Recreation Reserve.
It was an 11-goal second term from the Bulldogs which helped them secure a big victory, with the Magpies requiring six Golden Square players to compete for the afternoon.
The Bulldogs scored six goals in the first quarter to ensure that they would take a 41-point lead going into the first change, and would continue being as brutal as they possibly could in the second term by scoring 11 goals from 17 scoring shots as they completely dictated the pace of play, leading by 113 points at the main break.
Maryborough was able to reduce the rate of scoring in the third term, yet Golden Square still scored five goals to extend their lead to 149 points by the final change.
Golden Square peppered the goals in the final term, but to Maryborough’s credit, they were putting pressure on the Bulldogs when they had chances, which resulted in six goals from 15 scoring shots.
At the other end, some excellent ball movement from one end of the ground to the other helped the Magpies deliver their first and only goal of the day, with Cobie Read kicking his first senior goal in a positive moment.
It was Joel Swatton and Coby Perry who were named in the best, with the duo doing everything possible to give the Magpies a chance in the midfield.
Kya Lanfranchi and Alex Brown again had their hands full throughout the afternoon down back, but were up to the job, while Tom Myers and Aidan Medlyn again played some positive football.
It was also a tough day for Maryborough’s under 18s, who were powerless to stop Golden Square from winning by 140 points.
The Magpies were goalless in the first half, but were able to find two goals in the second term and another in the last, with Lewis Ritchie, Mitch Stork and Byron Ritchie all scoring for the Magpies.
Judd Stevens was Maryborough’s best, while Bailey Walhouse, Taj Costelow, Cooper Mark, Robert Castiglia and Joe Lovel were also named in the better players for the Magpies.
Maryborough will have their final home game for the season next week when the Magpies host Eaglehawk at Barker Oval Princes Park.
