Stringer secures dramatic late trade to GWS Giants for 2025
Jake Stringer has been granted his wish to move to the GWS Giants in a dramatic finish to the AFL’s trade period.

It’s the second sensational late trade involving a local district player in two seasons, following the dramatic trade of Jack Ginnivan from Collingwood to Hawthorn in 2023.
With time running out, it was reported with two hours remaining in the trade period that the Giants’ pursuit of Stringer had waned, but an eleventh-hour deal was done with five minutes left in the window.
Essendon relented after haggling which involved the 53rd pick, which was eventually accepted.
Stringer will now look to add to his 212 games of experience, having played 89 games for the Western Bulldogs from 2013 to 2017, and 123 games with Essendon from 2018 until this season, kicking 360 goals in his career.
The 2024 season was one of his better ones across the numbers, kicking 42 goals from 13 disposals per game and four marks per game.
Stringer now gets the opportunity to link up with a dynamic GWS forward line which includes 2024 Coleman Medallist Jesse Hogan, former number one draft pick Aaron Cadman and club captain Toby Greene.
Speaking to gwsgiants.com.au, GWS executive general manager of football Jason McCartney was thrilled to land the 2015 All-Australian.
“We are delighted to welcome Jake to the Giants,” he said.
“We identified Jake as someone that has the ability to be a match winner and after undergoing a thorough recruitment strategy, we believe he will add great value to our team.
“Having watched Jake’s career closely from the beginning, I’m very excited about his potential to thrive up here in Sydney in the Giants environment.”
The deal means that both of Essendon’s local products in Stringer and Clunes’ Nick Hind have both departed the club, with Hind delisted in August.
