Avoca Primary School student Josephine Blievers-Twomey was announced as the winner of the local Lions International Peace Poster Contest, supported by the Carisbrook Lions Club.
The contest has been running for eight years in the local community, with this year’s being the biggest yet with students from Avoca, Carisbrook, Dunolly, Maryborough Education Centre (MEC), Talbot and Timor submitting their artwork.
The contest has been running for 35 years as an opportunity for kids between the ages of 11 and 13 to use their art and creativity to show their meaning of peace.
Josephine’s artwork showcased this years theme of ‘Dare to Dream’, which aims to display the hard work needed to make the dream of peace into a reality.
“One half of my artwork shows the worst of the world and people wanting to destroy it, while the other half is all about peace,” she said.
Josephine’s artwork will go to the next stage of Victorian finals where she could follow the footsteps of Chloe Hua, a 13 year old from South Vermont, Melbourne who was recognised internationally for her piece last year.
Carisbrook Lions Club members and peace poster coordinators Katinka Hilder and Ann-Maree Clements, decided the district winner alongside Central Goldfields Art Gallery curator Helen Kaptein.
Ms Hilder congratulated Josephine and recognised the importance of the competition.
“It has been so wonderful to see so many schools get involved in this competition,” Ms Hilder said.
“I hope these students continue their artistic skills for events like ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day and I look forward to continuing the contest with local schools in the future.”
