With more Victorians than ever now owning at least one pet, the state’s first ever Pet Census is underway to get a better picture of owners and their pets.
The census opened on Monday and asks Victorians a variety of questions to gather information on pet ownership and the attitudes and experiences of owners.
The data collected will help form a clearer picture of pet companionship, and help the government support pet owners and improve pet welfare.
“The Victorian Pet Census will gather vital information which will help shape the next generation of pet and animal welfare reforms,” Minister for Agriculture Gayle Tierney said.
“The census is a unique opportunity for pet owners from across the state to share their insights, opinions, and experiences.”
Post-pandemic, pet ownership rates in Australian households has risen from 61 percent to 69 percent.
The Victorian Pet Census takes 15 minutes to complete and can be found at animalwelfare.vic.gov.au
