There was a big weekend of movement across both divisions of the Saturday pennant.
Talbot Gold made the biggest statement of the weekend in division one, rolling into the Highland Society and defeating reigning premiers Highland Tartan.
It was, as expected, a tight game between two of the powerhouses of the competition, with each rink decided by three shots or less.
Greg Shay got Highland Tartan on the board, defeating Peter Fletcher 20-19, but Talbot Gold got themselves back in it through Peter McLaughlan, who won 17-16 over Andrew Brumby. Talbot Gold ensured they would take the points, with Paul Radstock defeating Garry Coburn 24-21.
Also making a big move was Avoca Red, who roared into the top four courtesy of a 74-36 win over Highland White.
Leanne Wallis gave Highland White the points on rink one courtesy of an 18-13 win over Graeme Orr, but it was all Avoca on the remaining two rinks, with Daniel Giddings defeating Jennifer McHugh 26-8, and Noel Parratt defeating Robert Bursill 35-10 to take a big win.
Close behind is Newstead Blue, who moved to within six points of Avoca Red in fifth thanks to a 75-42 win over Dunolly Gold.
Newstead narrowly missed out on taking a clean sweep of the day, with Brian Daly going down to Keith Elliott 17-18. But the remaining two rinks saw Newstead play their best, with Bill Burnett defeating Wayne Stephens 29-13, and David Cobden defeating Sandra Chaplin 29-11.
Dunolly Blue have now taken over on top of the division one ladder, courtesy of a clean sweep over Maryborough Golf Blue which sees them 10 points clear on top.
It was Peter Waters’ 34-5 win over Anthony Chambers which gave Dunolly Blue the leeway they needed throughout the afternoon, with the other two legs proving to be close. But Tony Galofaro’s 23-18 win over Gerry Carmody, and Gregory Dobbin’s 21-17 win over Kevin Prime ensured Dunolly Blue would take all 16 competition points on offer.
In division two, Carisbrook made the big statement of the weekend by disposing of Highland Red 76-46 to move clear on top of the ladder.
In doing so, Carisbrook took all 16 points as they marked their Saturday pennant return to the Carisbrook Bowling Club on a high.
Ron Baker was able to defeat Lance Wadeson 31-14, while Phillip Burt defeated Tilleke Wadeson 22-14. In the closest rink of the day, Syd Pearson defeated Albert Spencer 23-18.
Talbot Brown have moved into second, 12 points behind Carisbrook, thanks to a 76-48 win over Avoca Gold which also saw them clean sweep during the weekend.
Steven Murray defeated Ann Loosmore 25-16, while Barb Crossley also took care of Allyson Hearnden 22-18. Ray Prentice finished off the job with a strong 29-14 win over Matthew Higgins.
Maryborough Golf Gold got a much-needed win to keep in touch with the top four thanks to a 74-42 win over Dunolly Green in another result where there was a clean sweep.
John Scott defeated David Price 24-12, while Trevor Young defeated Aaron Britten 22-18. Ross Andrews finished off a good day’s work for Golf Gold, defeating Karen Waters 28-12.
Maldon had a week off, as Newstead White forfeited their game.
An intriguing fourth round sees Highland Tartan looking to avoid a second consecutive defeat when they travel to Dunolly Blue.
Fresh off their big win over Highland Tartan, Talbot Gold are in good position to move up the ladder, as they host Newstead Blue. A win will see them move to second on the ladder.
Should Talbot and Highland Tartan both lose, however, Avoca Red could move up to second, and will be favoured to defeat winless Dunolly Gold at the Dunolly Bowling Club.
Maryborough Golf Blue and Highland White will be looking to keep in touch with the top four when the two meet at the Maryborough Golf Club.
In division two, ladder-leader Carisbrook will travel to Avoca Gold as they look to maintain their good start to the season, while Talbot Brown are due to travel to Newstead to face Newstead White.
Highland Red will look to bounce back when they host Maryborough Golf Gold at the Highland Society, while Maldon will look to defeat Dunolly Green at the Maldon Bowling Club.
