MARYBOROUGH ROVERS 11.8 (74) def by TALBOT 12.7 (79)

It was an exciting finish at Princes Park for the Melbourne-Barras Trophy in which the Hawks got the victory by just five points.

Rovers were boosted by the inclusion of Chris Freeman and Ty Stewart from Maryborough who had the league bye and Freeman in particular played a big role for the Magpies. A number of players also returned for the Magpies from the previous week against Trentham.

It was an entertaining tussle for the majority of the game and the game was in the balance at half time as the Hawks led by seven points.

The Hawks kicked out to a 25-point lead and the seemed to have the game in their keeping at three quarter time.

Some complacency kicked in, and the Magpies moved into top gear in the engine room and staged an amazing comeback to kick four final quarter goals, while holding the Hawks to just one major.

But it was not enough to get the Magpies over the line in what turned out to be a thriller for the Princes Park crowd.

Talbot’s better players were Matthew Bond, who kicked six goals), Darcy Osborne, Alex Marshall, Trent Barras, who passed 400 goals for his career on the day, Nathan Bond and Adam Scott.

Rovers’ best was Freeman, Montgomery Reeves, Marshall Murray, Dylan Evans, Jacob Dyer and Mitchell Whelan, with four goals to Andy Siekai leading the way.
