The Maryborough and District Triathlon Club conducted the third event on its 2022/23 club championship calendar from the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre on Sunday, December 11.
Triathletes were greeted with pleasant sunny conditions and light winds, which were well received by all.
The event was the first traditional triathlon of the season after the recent La Nina weather conditions necessitated changing to the reverse format in the two previous events. Event distances were long course – 400 m swim, 8 km cycle (2 x 4 km loop), and 2 km run, and short course - 200 m swim, 4 km cycle, and 1 km run.
In the long course event it was Adam Lowery (open male) who set a blistering pace in the pool with Rowena Butler (50+ female), and young Cooper Mark (under 16 male) in hot pursuit. All triathletes enjoyed strong cycle and run legs with Lowery continuing to maintain outstanding form as he crossed the finish line (33:50) to post the fastest time of the day and win the open male category. Mark (39:16) posted the second fastest time to win the under 16 male category, with Butler (39:43) only seconds behind in third place overall and winner of the 50+ female category.
In the short course it was 50+ female triathlete Emily Ryan who combined an outstanding three discipline performance to post the fastest short course time of the day (23:51). Sophie Mark, in her first triathlon for the season, also enjoyed the traditional format, posting the strong time of 29:20 to win the open female category. Ella Govan, who displayed strong swim form, unfortunately had a malfunction on the cycle leg, and increased her run leg to compensate.
Although not completing the official triathlon on the day, Ella combined the swim and run for an aquathon time of 21:36.
The Maryborough and District Triathlon Club is promoting the Echuca Moama Triathlon event as a lead up to its next club event. The Echuca Moama Triathlon will be conducted on Saturday, January 21, 2023, and will involve a 700 m swim, 20 km ride, and 5 km run.
The next club event will be a Duathlon conducted at the picturesque Princes Park precinct on Sunday, February 12, 2023 involving a run, ride, run circuit taking in the Lake Victoria Walking Track.
The club is also preparing to conduct its highly popular Kidz Triathlon from the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre and Jack Pascoe Reserve on Sunday, March 5, 2023. The event is designed for newcomers (aged 7-12 years old) to the sport and will involve a 25 m swim, 1 km cycle, and 400 m run.
Families with young budding triathletes keen to give the sport a go should mark this date in their diaries. Entry forms and further information to be provided by the club in the New Year.
