The Maryborough and Dis-trict Triathlon Club conducted the longest event on its 2022/23 club calendar from the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre on Sunday, April 2 in excellent triathlon conditions.

The event was a long course triathlon which also featured the short course option. Course lengths were long course — 400 metre swim, 20 kilometre ride, and 4 km run, and short course — 200 m swim, 4 km ride, and 1 km run.

The open male long course category featured a strong field of new and experienced triathletes including Adam Lowery, Jeff Beer, Will Coutts, and Jayden Hooper.

All triathletes enjoyed strong performances in the pool with Hooper assuming the lead as the triathletes exited Maryborough on the 20 km loop ride out to Craigie, Carisbrook, and back to Maryborough.

Beer was in hot pursuit, and little separated these two as they passed through Craigie. Lowery and Coutts were also within striking distance as all triathletes moved towards Carisbrook.

It was Hooper who was able to maintain his strong form on the bike and then back this up with an equally impressive 4 km run leg to complete the course in the outstanding time of 58:10 to take line honours.

Beer (62:43) continued to push to the line, showing the benefits of a strong summer season to take second place, with Coutts (63:33) also displaying strong first season form to take third place, and Lowery produced a strong run leg to finish in fourth place (68:58).

In the under 16 male long course category it was young triathlete Cooper Mark who put in a solid three-discipline performance to post the winning time of 69:45, shaving almost one minute off his previous time at this distance.

In the 50+ female short course it was Rowena Butler who produced an outstanding performance to set the highly impressive time of 23:40 to take line honours.

Rubie Hooper also enjoyed the under 16 short course producing the excellent time of 24:08 to take first place in this category.

The May club event will be the Goldfields Reservoir Fun Run involving 4.9 km run (three laps) or 9.8 km run (six laps) options from the Goldfields reservoir boat ramp.
