Triathlon season begins in earnest

The Maryborough & District Triathlon Club conducted the first event of its 2022/23 Club Championship Season from the Maryborough Sports & Leisure Centre on Sunday, August 14.

Light winds and pleasant, sunny conditions were well received by all triathletes with many posting personal best times on the day.

The long course reverse triathlon format involved a 2 kilometre run, 8 km cycle, and 400 metre swim, and the short course 1 km run, 4 km cycle, and 200 m swim.

In the long course it was Cooper Mark who set the early pace on the 2 km run with Jeffrey Beer, Adam Lowery, Helen Lusby, and Jaclyn Beer in hot pursuit.

Mark Barras was also setting a strong pace in preparation for the 8 km cycle leg.

Triathletes all enjoyed the conducive cycling conditions as they entered in readiness for the 400 m swim with Jeffrey assuming first place as the field transitioned into the 25 m pool complex.

Jeffrey was able to hold his form throughout the swim leg to touch in the fastest time of the day to win the open male category in the outstanding time of 33:48.

Adam Lowery produced his trademark strong swim to take second place in the open male category in the time of 36:40.

Cooper Mark posted the impressive time of 35:44 to win the under 16 male category, and Mark Barras touched in next in a time of 41:03 to win the open team category.

Helen Lusby continues to impress with her strong form in all triathlon disciplines to win the 50+ female long course category in the time of 44:41, and Jaclyn Beer completed her first long course event in fine style to win the open female category (48:12).

In the short course, it was young gun triathlete Joshua Britten who set the course alight to post the outstanding time of 20:05 to win the open male category.

Ella Govan also enjoyed the course posting her personal best time of 26:49 to win the under 16 female category.

The next club event will be a long course triathlon involving a 400 m swim, 20 km ride, and 4 km run on Sunday, September 11 from the Maryborough Sport & Leisure Centre, with short course options as well.

Registrations commence at 9 am for a 9.30 am start.
