Police are urging drivers to take care around heavy vehicles after a collision with a truck left a car on its side in a ditch near Carisbrook.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of the Pyrenees Highway and Potts Lane near Carisbrook at around 8.50 am yesterday morning, after a collision involving a truck pulling a semi trailer and a vehicle.

According to police, the truck was turning left into Potts Lane when the vehicle attempted to pass on the left hand side, causing it to be pushed into a deep drain.

The driver of the vehicle, a 38-year-old Maryborough woman, escaped the vehicle with no apparent injuries while the truck driver was unharmed.

Central Goldfields Highway Patrol Sergeant Paul Martin said while the collision involved no serious injury, it’s a reminder for drivers to take additional precautions around larger vehicles.

“This was a fairly low speed collision but it does highlight the need for people to take care when driving around heavy vehicles,” he said.

“We’ve had a couple of heavy vehicle related collisions and due to the size and weight of these vehicles, the consequences can very easily become fatal.

“Fortunately there were no serious injuries which is a good outcome in relation to this incident, however people need to be careful when driving around heavy vehicles.”

Sgt Martin said with harvest underway in the district and more trucks on the road than normal, drivers needed to be especially considerate.

“There are a lot of heavy vehicles on the roads at the moment with harvest and that’s happening right across the region,” he said.

“Trucks do need to swing out wide in order to complete their turns and they are allowed to do that, even when it sometimes involves crossing over the middle of the road.

“It’s a matter of awareness and attention to driving to the conditions — trucks need to be given a bit of space and drivers need to be considerate.”
