The first of the State Singles titles were played last week, with Highland’s Leanne Wallis taking out the women’s state singles title for the Goldfields Playing Area on December 10.

Wallis defeated Maryborough Golf’s Michelle Harris in the final, scoring 25 shots to 18.

Both bowlers played three games, with Harris defeating Annette Gillham 25-15 in the first round, before defeating Jenny Davey 25-20 in the semi final.

For Wallis, she defeated Helen Slater 25-9 in the first round, while a 25-8 win over Leonie Briggs in the semi final continued to assert her dominance.

Meantime, the men’s competition completed the first three rounds of the state singles, with the semi-finals and final set to be played in late January.

Twenty-one entrants were received, which has now been whittled down to the final four.

Newstead’s Bill Burnett, Talbot duo Paul Radstock and Matt Vernon and Maryborough Golf’s Anthony Chambers have progressed through to the semi-finals, which will be played at the Highland Society on Sunday, January 28.

In the quarter-finals of the competition, Burnett was able to defeat Daniel Giddings 25-15 to progress, while Radstock defeated Peter Sedgwick 25-9. Chambers was able to defeat Greg Long 25-3 in a dominant performance, while defending champion Vernon was able to take a 25-1 win over Ian Stevenson.

As a result, Burnett will take on Radstock in the first semi, while Vernon and Chambers will meet in the other semi.
