Weapons have been seized and four people arrested following a dramatic police operation in Maryborough on Tuesday, which saw heavily armed tactical police block Sutton Road and search a property.

A stretch of Sutton Road between Gillies Street and Fraser Street was blocked by marked and unmarked police vehicles until around 3 pm Tuesday as part of an investigation into a series of aggravated home invasions.

Members of Victoria Police’s Special Operations Group arrested a man, teenager and a woman in Sutton Road at about 2.50 pm, with a second woman handing herself into a local police station later in the day.

When the woman was arrested, she handed over the keys to the car she arrived in — an allegedly stolen 2015 Mercedes SK35, which is believed to have been stolen in an aggravated burglary in Kennington earlier this month.

Police also spent some time searching a property in Sutton Road under firearm prohibition order provisions, uncovering a .223 bolt action rifle with scope, alleged imitation Glock style handgun, a quantity of ammunition, stolen registration plates and an axe.

An allegedly stolen Kia Optima was also seized, believed stolen from an aggravated burglary in Tootgarook this month.

The arrests follow an extensive police investigation into four aggravated home invasions at properties in Green Street, Carisbrook on February 7, Poplar Street, Golden Square on February 9, Vale Street, Sebastopol on February 10 and Smeaton Road, Clunes on February 19.

A 34-year-old woman and 26-year-old man, both of no fixed addresses, were each charged with four counts of aggravated home invasion, kidnapping and firearm offences.

A 26-year-old Maryborough woman has been charged with three counts of aggravated burglary and a 17-year-old boy has been charged with one count of aggravated burglary.

The man and two women were remanded to appear before the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday this week, where the matters were adjourned until May 29.

The teenager will appear before a children’s court.

Victoria Police’s Special Operations Group, detectives from the Central Goldfields Crime Investigation Unit, Western Region Crime Squad detectives and uniform police were involved in Tuesday’s arrests.
