Wood claims best and fairest, Magpies prepare for under 14 decider
An exciting week for Maryborough’s junior football cohorts has started with Campbell Wood announced as the Bendigo Junior Football League under 16 best and fairest.
Wood’s ascension to the top makes it his second such success in three years, having taken the under 14s best and fairest in 2022.
The exciting utility polled 20 votes to win by two votes from Maiden Gully’s Lewis Pigdon, while in an exhilarating vote count for Maryborough footballers through-out the night, Logan Howell polled equal-third on 15 votes, while last year’s winner, Zac Cicchini, polled 11 votes, despite battling injury trouble throughout the season.
That followed a big effort in the under 14 count for Jack Smith, who finished equal runner-up in the count with 22 votes.
Jayden Humphrey also had a great season, polling 18 votes to finish fifth, while Hayden Bartlett (12 votes) and Cruz Stevens (11 votes) finished eighth and ninth respectively.
This week will be highlighted by Maryborough’s under 14s taking on Marong in the under 14 reserve two grand final, with a time and location not yet determined at the time of production.
The Magpies have been too strong for the Panthers in their two meetings this year, winning by 58 points in their round eight clash at Barkers Oval Princes Park, before a tough away trip in round 13 saw them win by 13 points at Malone Park.
Those results were crucial to helping the Magpies finish four-and-a-half games clear on top of the ladder, where they were able to take advantage and defeat Huntly by 22 points in their second semi-final last week.
