For Highton’s Kim Mc-Donough, Sunday’s 400 m final ended a long wait for success in Maryborough — but it also proved to be a testament to her consistency over a long period of time.
“I’ve actually won a 200 m here back in 1997, and I won the women’s 400 in 2005, I was a bit younger, but I’m 46 now, so I’m not getting any younger,” she said.
McDonough’s victory in the 400 m final was an incredible achievement, one which saw her repel all challengers throughout the front straight, holding off fierce challenges from Laura McDougall and Alex Tzilantonis to eventually finish with the win with a time of 56.86.
McDougall (57.7) finished second, with Tzilantonis (58.19) finishing third.
McDonough said it was a pleasure to be able to win again over her favourite distance.
“I enjoyed running that. The 400 is my favourite distance. I just think I had to put it out of my mind for the one minute, and it was the same for everyone, so I just went for it,” she said.
McDonough was grateful for the assistance she receives from her family, who help train her.
“I had my husband, Matthew, help out — we’ve been together for 20 years — and one of my kids, Nick, who gives me sessions, they all help me,” she said.
“I just go out and enjoy my running. If I stopped, then it would be gone forever.”
