The Central Goldfields Shire Youth Council has appointed its first mayor and deputy mayors, with the trio set to lead the youth council throughout 2023.
Khoa Do was appointed mayor and Eizabeth Lewington and Anakin Hurley were named deputy mayors at a Meeting of Youth Council earlier this week, now set to lead the youth council until December next year.
“It’s a privilege for me to get to represent this group of wonderful like-minded people. I look forward to working together to achieve our goals,” Mr Do said.
Ms Lewington said she’s looking forward to the opportunities the youth council will bring.
“I’m grateful for this role and I’m excited for the opportunity to represent not the youth council, but all young people in Central Goldfields,” she said.
Fellow deputy mayor Mr Hurley said he was likewise looking forward to taking on the role.
“I’m grateful that I was able to obtain the role of deputy youth mayor, and I will fulfil it to my highest ability,” he said.
Central Goldfields Shire Council mayor Chris Meddows-Taylor said he was thrilled to formally appoint the youth council’s new mayor and deputy mayors to their new roles.
“Congratulations to Khoa, Elizabeth and Anakin. It’s been really rewarding to see the progress our youth council have made in such a short amount of time,” he said.
“They’ve already established a Priorities Statement for their term which identifies the issues they feel are most important for young people in our shire. They’ve also hit the ground running with an Action Plan which detailed the projects they are committed to delivering.
“Having got to know each of the youth councillors over the past few months, I know they have thought deeply about the needs of young people, the importance of inclusiveness and belonging and the importance of feeling safe.”
Youth council have developed a Priorities Statement which identifies the following areas they will be focusing on during the 2022-2023 financial year:
• Education and aspiration
• Respect, tolerance, awareness and acceptance
• Climate change and the environment
• More for youth to do
• Youth hub
The actions youth council will undertake to address areas of priority are outlined in the Priorities Action Plan. Both documents are available to view at www.centralgoldfields.vic.gov.au/
