Preparations are well underway for Maryborough’s International Women’s Day (IWD) event later this month, with former local and award-winning journalist Bridget Rollason appearing as guest speaker.
Taking place at the Maryborough Golf Club on Monday, February 27, the event is a mainstay of the Zonta Club of Central Goldfields and aims to inspire local women to be the best versions of themselves.
IWD is held internationally on March 8 and is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
While the local event is taking place earlier than normal, Zonta’s Jane Martin said the event is open to the whole community to inspire local women.
“IWD is all about embracing how women feel in their standing in the world and I think now, women are feeling empowered,” she said.
“This is an inclusive event that’s open to everyone and it’s wonderful, in the past everyone has come together and really enjoyed it and we’re expecting the same to happen again this year.
“From a club perspective, it’s exciting to host this event again and to have a really quality guest speaker is great, our speakers are inspiring for young people in particular.”
Bridget has been the ABC’s state political reporter since 2019 and helped lead the broadcaster’s coverage of the recent Victorian election and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Last year, Bridget won a Melbourne Press Club Quill award for her pandemic coverage and in 2018, was named the Rural Press Club of Victoria’s Young Journalist of the year.
Passionate about regional journalism, Bridget has worked for the ABC in Ballarat and in commercial television for Prime7 in Albury, Ballarat and Canberra.
Ms Martin said as with past events, the upcoming IWD celebration is looking to be a success.
“We’re all about trying to support the women and girls in town to improve their standing and education so they can be the best versions of themselves,” she said.
“There are so many terrific people that have come out of Maryborough and these IWD events are always successful, we’re chuffed to think the community appreciate these events as much as they do.”
The event at the Maryborough Golf Club will take place at 6 pm, with tickets to be available through the Maryborough Golf Club on 5460-4900 in the coming days.
